.Q1. What are volleyball positions?

A1. There are six positions. Service is position 1 and increase counter clockwise. So front row is position 4-3-2 and back row is 5-6-1.

Q2: What is service order?

A2: The players should follow the clockwise service order 1-2-3-4-5-6-1.

That means player 3 serves after player 2 but before player 4. This should also be the relative position when the ball is served for play. For example, when ball is served (either side) the player 3 must be between 2 and 4 and in front of 6. However once the ball is served, anybody can move to any position within the court.

Q3: What is Setter's home?

A3: The spot where setter is always supposed to move to during offense play. That is also the passing target of the first touch.

Q4: What are 1,2,31 and 3+ lines indicate?

A4: The lines indicate height/length and type of sets. For example, 1 and 2 and 31 are the type of sets to run middle hits whereas 3 and 4(3+) are for outside and opposite.

Q5: What is a 6-2 rotation?

A5: In 6-2 rotation the setter is always in the back court. When the setter rotates in to the front court(position 5->4) then he becomes a hitter or substituted out with a hitter

Q6: What is transition and when does it occur?

A6: A transition is resetting the team(position) for next play.

When the ball goes to the opponenet's side of the net, we need to transition from offense to defense which means ready to block, dig and tip coverage.

When the ball comes to this side of the net, then we need to transition from defense to offense which means 1) a passer in best position pass the ball to setter's home 2) setter moves to the setter's home and 3) hitters reset their position to hit the next ball.

Q7: How do you win a match?

A7: The volleyball matches are played best of 3 of 5 in which a team that wins 3 sets will win the match. In lower levels, sometimes a best of 2 out of 3 is also used. When your team wins 3 sets then you win the match.

Q8: How do you win a set?

A8: Your team wins if you score 25 points before the opponente. If the score is tied at 24, then the game is played until a team wins by 2 points e.g.: 26-24 ot 27-25 or 28-26.

Q9: What is a tie breaker set?

A9: When both teams win 2 sets, then a 5th set is played as the tie breaker. The 5th set will be played to 15 points. Your team wins if it scores 15 points before the other team. If the score is tied at 14, then the win by two points rule applies--your team wins when score 16-14, 17-15, 18-16....

Q10: How does your team wins a point?

A10:  Volleyball is considered 'live' when the ball is served. There are several significances of the serve:

  • A service is performed after the referee's indication(blow of the whistle)
  • All 12 players(both teams) are expected to maintain the 'rotation' relative to their current position.
  • After the server serves, any players(defense or offense) are allowed to move any position.
  • A served ball is 'live'  before it touchses the floor. Once it touches the floor it is dead.
  • The serving team wins a point with service ace, block, opponent passing error or attack error.
  • The receiving team wins a point when the serve is fault(in the net or out), the receiving team performs a successful attack.
